Why I Built seedoils.net
A free resource for people who care about what they put in — and on — their bodies.
I'm Maddox Schmidlkofer, a 21-year-old Computer Science student at Purdue University. I've been building things on the internet since I was 16 — from an unblocked games site that hit 1.5 million monthly users, to a cloud gaming platform that got acquired.
But after exiting my second startup, I had a question that kept bugging me: what do I actually want to build?
Then I watched The Plastic Detox. And it wrecked me.
I already cared about what I put in my mouth. But this documentary showed me the full picture — toxic plastics in our food packaging, seed oils in everything we eat at restaurants, herbicides and additives that companies don't have to disclose. The more I researched, the worse it got. Phthalates in aluminum foil. Microplastics in canned food. Seed oils in Chipotle.
So I went looking for tools to help. I found a few — Olive App, Seed Oil Scout, Exposr. But they all had the same problem: hard paywalls on essential health information. People in the reviews were furious about it. And I get it — if you're trying to eat clean, you shouldn't have to pay $10/month just to know which restaurants won't poison you.
That's why I built seedoils.net. It's a free, open, community-powered directory. No paywall. No premium tier. No fear-based marketing. Just a clean list of vetted restaurants, products, food brands, and creators who are actually doing good work in this space.
But listing products isn't enough. My goal is to actually test each product we feature — verify the claims, check the ingredients, and make sure what's on the label matches what's in the package. If a brand says "BPA-free" or "seed-oil-free," we want to confirm it, not just take their word for it.
